Location:  Syracuse or Liverpool, NY

First, Second, and Third shifts Available - (Hourly Shift Incentive Pay available for 2nd and 3rd shifts in addition to base rate of pay!) 

ABOUT US:  Laboratory Alliance is the area’s largest state-licensed laboratory, providing clinical and anatomic pathology testing to a 16-county region in Central New York. As the laboratory of choice for most local healthcare providers, more than 10 million tests are performed annually at our laboratories at our Operations Center in Liverpool and at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: 

The Specimen Processor‘s main responsibility is the proper handling and processing of incoming laboratory specimens for clinical diagnostic testing. Must have availability for rotating weekend and holiday availability.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Performed under moderate supervision

  • Specimen accessioning and processing:
    • Specimen labeling
    • Specimen sorting
    • Basic requisition entry in information systems
    • Loading/unloading specimens in centrifuge
    • Distribution of stat specimens to technical area
    • Manual aliquoting, as needed
    • Specimen archiving, retrieval and disposal
  • Answering and directing phone calls
    • Critical and/or stat notifications to clients and problem resolution
    • Answering and directing calls to appropriate departments
    • Redirecting customer service inquiries
  • Instrument maintenance
    • Tecan, centrifuges, and incubators
    • Refrigerators and freezers
  • Review and resolution of pending logs
  • Assisting with audit of manual entered tests 

EDUCATION: 

  • High School or equivalent; Associate Degree in a science discipline, desirable
  • 0-1 year of laboratory experience
  • Basic knowledge common to a healthcare environment

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HAZARDS: 

  • Exposure to communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, toxic substances and other conditions common to a healthcare environment.

  • The work environment is primarily a laboratory setting
  • The employee is regularly both stationary and required to move about
  • Frequently have ability to perform duties associated with the use of a computer and laboratory instruments
  • Must have ability to grasp small objects and tasks associated with eye-hand coordination
  • Must be able to distinguish details of objects less than a few feet away
  • Determine and detect difference between size, color, numbers, shades, and brightness, as well as differentiate sounds
  • Frequently required to communicate with other staff and have the ability to frequently lift and maneuver up to 50 pounds

SKILLS AND  OTHER REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Proven interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to adapt to changing workload and stressful situations
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Strong computer skills required for patient registration and order entry
  • May be required to use computer terminals, centrifuges, telephones, copiers

$17.00 an hour
