ABOUT US: Laboratory Alliance is the area’s largest state-licensed laboratory, providing clinical and anatomic pathology testing to a 16-county region in Central New York. As the laboratory of choice for most local healthcare providers, more than 10 million tests are performed annually at our laboratories at our Operations Center in Liverpool and at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the medical direction of the pathologist and under the administrative direction of the Technical Manager or site Manager, the Cytotechnologist is a clinical laboratory practitioner who, pursuant to established and approved protocols of the NYS Department of Health, performs cytological procedures which require the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility, as determined by the department.  May have frequent contact with patients, hospital employees, physicians, pathologists, nursing personnel, visitors, laboratory personnel, vendors, regulatory or accrediting agencies and students. Other duties as assigned.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

High complexity testing.

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s degree in Cytotechnology, or related area and qualify as a Cytotechnologist under NYS Department of Education and NYS Department of Health. Registered with the NYSDOH. New York State Department of Education license or a limited permit is required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HAZARDS:

The work environment is primarily a laboratory setting with high risk exposure to communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, toxic substances, and other conditions common to a healthcare environment.

The  physical  demands  described  here  are  representative  of  those  that  must  be  met  by  an  employee  to  successfully perform  the  essential  functions  of  this  job.  Reasonable  accommodations  may  be  made  to  enable  individuals  with disabilities  to  perform  the  essential  functions. The employee is regularly both stationary and required to move about from work station to station. Frequently required to perform duties associated with the use of a computer and laboratory instruments; to grasp small objects and perform tasks associated with eye-hand coordination; to distinguish details of objects less than a few feet away and determine and detect difference between size, color, numbers, shades, and brightness, as well as differentiate sounds. Must have the ability to frequently lift and maneuver up to 50 pounds.

Ability to make independent decisions, proven interpersonal and communication skills, ability to adapt to changing workload and stressful situations, and resolve routine problems without supervision.
