Specimen Required
Collect

48-hour stool. Refrigerate during collection. Provide patient 1-2 Timed Stool Collection Kits.

Transport

Submit entire 48 hour stool collection in the approved transport containers, frozen.

Remarks

The patient should be on a diet consisting of 50-150g of fat per day for three days prior to the study. Non-absorbable fat substitutes, such as Olestra, should be avoided prior to collection.

Stability

Ambient: 1 hour; Refrigerated: 96 hours; Frozen: 2 weeks.

Unacceptable Conditions

Specimens containing barium, charcoal; specimens in media or preservatives. Containers larger than 500 mL (500g) such as paint cans, will be rejected and discarded.
