Collect

Plasma (Lithium heparin or EDTA). Use prechilled tubes.

Remarks

** MUST HAVE OWN DEDICATED TUBE**

  • Keep the collection tube chilled by placing it on ice before and after specimen collection.
  • Venipuncture should occur prior to Sulfapyridine administration due to the potential for falsely depressed results.
  • Venipuncture should occur prior to Sulfasalazine administration due to the potential for falsely elevated results.
Stability

**TRANSPORT SPECIMEN ON ICE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE**

  • Specimen must arrive at laboratory within 60 minutes after collection.
  • Whole blood samples arriving at the laboratory more than 60 minutes after collection will be rejected.
  • If the whole blood sample cannot be transported to the laboratory within 60 minutes, centrifuge sample and transfer plasma to a screw top, polypropylene transport tube.
  • Freeze immediately and transport to the laboratory on dry ice. Once in the laboratory, specimen must be analyzed immediately or stored frozen.
  • Stable 12 hours frozen. (Per in-house stability study)
Unacceptable Conditions

Whole blood specimens not transported on ice. Whole blood specimens received more than 60 minutes after collection. Frozen whole blood specimens.
