FDA Issues Guidelines to Conserve Use of Sodium Citrate Blue Top Tubes
Wednesday, June 16, 2021
There is a nationwide shortage of sodium citrate blue top tubes due to increased demand and vendor recalls. While Laboratory Alliance currently has an adequate supply, the FDA has issued the following conservation guidelines:
Do not use sodium citrate tubes unless medically necessary.
Do not collect sodium citrate tubes in routine collections of a variety of specimens at the time of other blood sampling.
Do not use sodium citrate tubes as discard tubes. Use “no additive” tubes as an alternative.
Limit allocation of 1.8mL sodium citrate tubes for difficult blood collections.
Updates will be provided as information becomes available.
