POSITION:  Transfusion Services Supervisor

LOCATION:  Laboratory Alliance Rapid Response Laboratory, Syracuse NY 

ABOUT US: Laboratory Alliance is the area’s largest state-licensed laboratory, providing clinical and anatomic pathology testing to a 16-county region in Central New York. As the laboratory of choice for most local healthcare providers, more than 10 million tests are performed annually at our laboratories at our Operations Center in Liverpool and at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y.

POSITION SUMMARY: 

Under the general direction of the Rapid Response Manager, the supervisor demonstrates critical thinking skills, scientific judgment and leadership. The supervisor is responsible for providing laboratory services in accordance with the accreditation authorities, physicians’ orders, policies, procedures, established standards and administrative policies. The supervisor completes position responsibilities by following established guidelines and protocols within the appropriate time frame; demonstrates good skills in all forms of communication. The supervisor works with the RRL Manager to facilitate completion of projects and PI studies, data gathering for transfusion committees, interaction with hospital management with regards to transfusion-related policies, support of the day to day operations in Transfusion Services. Works well with others in a spirit of teamwork and cooperation. Maintains education and development appropriate for position. Adheres to established department guidelines and protocols. Supports mission, vision and values. All other duties as requested. May have contact with patients, hospital employees, physicians, pathologists, nursing personnel, visitors, laboratory personnel, vendors, and regulatory or accrediting agencies.

EDUCATION: 

Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related field or qualify as a Medical Technologist under NYS Department of Health Regulation Part 58.15 and has a valid NYS License issued by the NYS DOE. The Supervisor must have 6 years of clinical, technical experience with advanced testing in Immunohematology preferred but not required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HAZARDS:

Exposure to communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, toxic substances, and other conditions common to a health care environment.

The work environment is primarily a laboratory setting. The employee is regularly both stationary and required to move about from work station to station. Frequently required to perform duties associated with the use of a computer and  laboratory instruments; to grasp small objects and perform tasks associated with eye-hand coordination; to distinguish details of objects less than a few feet away and determine and detect difference between size, color, numbers, shades, and brightness, as well as differentiate sounds. Frequently required to communicate with other staff and have the ability to frequently move up to 30 pounds.

SKILLS AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: 

Proven interpersonal and communication skills, ability to adapt to changing workload and stressful situations. Knowledge and experience in in medical insurance systems, clinical lab testing. Experience in pre-analytical sample/specimen processing. Experience with training/teaching.
