Position:  Technical Processing Assistant

Location: Laboratory Alliance Operations Center and Affiliated Hospitals; Syracuse, NY

ABOUT US:  Laboratory Alliance is the area’s largest state-licensed laboratory, providing clinical and anatomic pathology testing to a 16-county region in Central New York. As the laboratory of choice for most local healthcare providers, more than 10 million tests are performed annually at our laboratories at our Operations Center in Liverpool and at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Processing samples for analysis or referral.  This includes sorting, loading and unloading Tecan, distribution of stat samples to technical area, with centrifuging and manual aliquoting as needed.  Additional responsibilities include maintenance of Tecan, centrifuges, incubators, refrigerators and freezers and possibly analytical analyzers or equipment.  Specimen archiving, retrieval and disposal.  Phone duties, including answering and directing calls, critical and/or stat notifications to clients, and problem resolution.  Review and resolution of pending logs.  Loading/unloading of processed samples on clinical analyzers.  Assisting with audit of manual entered tests. Availability for rotating holidays and weekends a must.

EDUCATION: High School degree and 0-1 year of laboratory experience. Knowledge common to a basic healthcare environment. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HAZARDS: Exposure to communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, toxic substances and other conditions common to a healthcare environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires prolonged standing, some walking and sitting, some bending, stooping and stretching, eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity, ability to distinguish letters, numbers and symbols, use of computerized instruments, computer terminals, and other equipment common to a clinical laboratory. May require lifting up to 30 pounds or more. 

SPECIAL SKILLS, SKILLS, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:  Proven interpersonal and communication skills, ability to adapt to changing workload and stressful situations, excellent customer service skills, and strong computer skills required for patient registration and order entry. May be required to use the following equipment: computer terminals, centrifuges, telephones, copiers.
