 Laboratory Alliance is the area’s largest state-licensed laboratory, providing clinical and anatomic pathology testing to a 16-county region in Central New York. As the laboratory of choice for most local healthcare providers, more than 10 million tests are performed annually at our laboratories at our Operations Center in Liverpool and at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y.

POSITION:  The Histology Manager, under the direction of the Director of Laboratory Operations, serves as a member of the leadership team with oversight of the day to day operations of the Histology Department at the Operations Center.

RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to:

  • Staffing according to workload,
  • Budget preparation for director’s review and approval
  • Developing and implementing continuous process improvement projects
  • Interfacing with hospital administration and the three independent pathology practices
  • Providing supervision and HR support to the histology technical supervisors
  • Serve as a liaison (when needed) between hospital administration and the senior management staff of Laboratory Alliance
  • Frequent interaction with CEO, vice presidents, directors, RRL managers, department managers, supervisors, coordinators, finance department staff, information systems staff, human resources, hospital management, lab clients and prospects so as to promote excellent service delivery, client retention and fiscal responsibility
  • Responsible for ensuring the provision of laboratory services in accordance with the applicable accreditation authorities (i.e. NYSDOH, DNV)
  • Expected to perform duties independently and utilizes good judgment in handling a variety of HR and operational issues
  • Adheres to and supports all established company policies and procedures set forth by Laboratory Alliance including the company’s mission, vision statement and values. 

EDUCATION:   Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology; must qualify as a Medical Technologist under NYS Department of Health Regulation Part 58.15 and have a valid NYS License issued by the NYS DOE; with a minimum of six years of relevant clinical laboratory experience is required. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HAZARDS:  The work environment is primarily a laboratory setting with high risk exposure to communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, toxic substances, and other conditions common to a health care environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The  physical  demands  described  here  are  representative  of  those  that  must  be  met  by  an  employee  to  successfully perform  the  essential  functions  of  this  job.  Reasonable  accommodations  may  be  made  to  enable  individuals  with disabilities  to  perform  the  essential  functions. The employee is regularly both stationary and required to move about from work station to station. Frequently required to perform duties associated with the use of a computer and laboratory instruments; to grasp small objects and perform tasks associated with eye-hand coordination; to distinguish details of objects less than a few feet away and determine and detect difference between size, color, numbers, shades, and brightness, as well as differentiate sounds. Frequently required to communicate with other staff and have the ability to frequently lift and maneuver up to 50 pounds.

SKILLS AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:  The skills required of the Histology Manager include, but are not limited to, the ability to supervise and mentor others, to make sound and ethical decisions, to communicate and educate effectively and diplomatically, to act calmly and rationally in crisis situations, to gain and retain the respect and confidence of laboratory peers as well as senior leadership at the hospital and to interact effectively and confidently with present and potential clients.  Must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19.
