Position:  Laboratory Assistant

Location:  Laboratory Alliance of CNY; Syracuse, NY

ABOUT US:  Laboratory Alliance is the area’s largest state-licensed laboratory, providing clinical and anatomic pathology testing to a 16-county region in Central New York. As the laboratory of choice for most local healthcare providers, more than 10 million tests are performed annually at our laboratories at our Operations Center in Liverpool and at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y.

POSITION SUMMARY:  Under the general direction of the Department Supervisor.  May have contact with patients, hospital employees, physicians, pathologists, nursing personnel, visitors, laboratory personnel, vendors, and regulatory or accrediting agencies.

RESPONSIBILITIES include but not limited to:  All duties do not require a NYS License and are performed with moderate supervision:

  • Inventory, ordering, and restock supplies
  • Replenish water, alcohol, and bleach bottles
  • Restock kanbans
  • Manual results review
  • Locate samples
  • Call critical logs
  • Printing pending logs, QC outliers, and QC detailed data reports
  • Disinfect workcell areas
  • Performs QA duties as assigned (eyewash checks, temperature readings, centrifuge, timer, and thermometer validations)
  • Filing slides
  • Enter blood products in LIS and HAVIS Blood Bank tubes
  • Discard old samples
  • Crosstrain in other departments
  • All other duties assigned

EDUCATION:  

Bachelor’s Degree in relevant Biological or Chemical degree program/field with the following minimum coursework:

  • The following courses with laboratory component:
    • Two semesters of General Biology OR Anatomy & Physiology 6 – 8 credits
    • Two semester of General Chemistry 6 – 8 credits
  • Plus 8 – 12 credits of any combination of the following:
    • One semester of General Microbiology and/or cell-molecular biology
    • One semester of Organic Chemistry
    • One semester of Biochemistry and/or genetic

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HAZARDS: 

  • Exposure to communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, toxic substances, and other conditions common to a healthcare environment.

  • The work environment is primarily a laboratory setting
  • The employee is regularly both stationary and required to move about
  • Frequently have ability to perform duties associated with the use of a computer and laboratory instruments
  • Must have ability to grasp small objects and tasks associated with eye-hand coordination
  • Must be able to distinguish details of objects less than a few feet away
  • Determine and detect difference between size, color, numbers, shades, and brightness, as well as differentiate sounds
  • Frequently required to communicate with other staff and have the ability to frequently lift and maneuver up to 50 pounds

SKILLS AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Proven interpersonal and communication skills, ability to adapt to changing workload and stressful situations
  • Must be fully vaccinate for COVID-19
