ABOUT US: Laboratory Alliance is the area’s largest state-licensed laboratory, providing clinical and anatomic pathology testing to a 16-county region in Central New York. As the laboratory of choice for most local healthcare providers, more than 10 million tests are performed annually at our laboratories at our Operations Center in Liverpool and at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y.

POSITION SUMMARY:   

The Histology Supervisor, under the direction of the Manager serves as a member of the leadership team with oversight of the day to day operations of the clinical laboratory department in Histology.  May have contact with RRL managers, department managers, supervisors, coordinators, and directors; Finance department staff, information systems staff, human resources, hospital management and pathologists; Lab clients and prospects so as to promote excellent service delivery, client retention and fiscal responsibility

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Staffing according to workload; developing and implementing continuous process improvement projects; interfacing with hospital administration and the two independent pathology practices; and providing supervision and HR support to the department staff.  Expected to serve as a liaison (when needed) between staff and the senior management staff of Laboratory Alliance. Responsible for ensuring the provision of laboratory services in accordance with the applicable accreditation authorities (i.e. NYSDOH, DNV); Other duties, as assigned.

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology and must qualify as a Medical Technologist under NYS Department of Health Regulation Part 58.15 and have a valid NYS License issued by the NYS DOE.  A minimum of six years of relevant clinical laboratory experience is required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HAZARDS:

The work environment is primarily a laboratory setting with high risk exposure to communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, toxic substances, and other conditions common to a health care environment.

The employee is regularly both stationary and required to move about from work station to station. Frequently required to perform duties associated with the use of a computer and laboratory instruments; to grasp small objects and perform tasks associated with eye-hand coordination; to distinguish details of objects less than a few feet away and determine and detect difference between size, color, numbers, shades, and brightness, as well as differentiate sounds. Must have the ability to frequently lift and maneuver up to 50 pounds.

SKILLS AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to supervise and mentor others; make sound and ethical decisions and communicate and educate effectively and diplomatically.  Ability to act calmly and rationally in crisis situations and gain and retain the respect and confidence of laboratory peers as well as senior leadership at the hospital.  Interact effectively and confidently with present and potential clients. Expected to perform their duties independently and utilizes good judgment in handling a variety of HR and operational issues.  Adheres to, and supports all established company policies and procedures set forth by Laboratory Alliance including the company’s mission and vision statements, and values.
