Chief Information Officer (CIO)

The Chief Information Officer (CIO), under the direction of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), serves as a member of the senior leadership team and is responsible for overall administration of I.T. development, support and staffing; along with budget planning, contract management, regulatory compliance, and management development. The CIO supports Laboratory Alliance's mission, vision and values and respects the confidentiality of all information encountered. The CIO maintains flexibility to meet Laboratory Alliance's needs and accepts other duties as appropriate.

Responsibilities of the Chief Information Officer (CIO) include but are not limited to:

  • Assessment Assesses current processes, recommends software and hardware upgrades, and directs the executive team on the best I.T. processes
  • Sets objectives and strategies for the I.T. department
  • Selects and implements suitable technology to streamline all internal operations to optimize their strategic benefits
  • Acts as liaison to clients for technology systems and platforms that will improve the customer experience
  • Develops and prioritizes I.T. budgetary needs; forecasting for 1-5 years
  • Selects new technologies and develops contracts with vendors.
  • Oversees the technology infrastructure (networks and computer systems) in the organization to ensure optimal performance
  • Monitors changes or advancements in technology to help the company can gain competitive advantage
  • Analyzes the costs, value and risks of information technology and suggests actions
  • Engages and reviews service/maintenance contracts and resolves any contract issue when necessary
  • Responsible for the I.T. department’s management of all electronic devices including but not limited to: hardware/software, PC, faxes, printers, copiers, PDAs, laptops, all telephone and security systems throughout the enterprise.
  • Responsible for enterprise security (including compliance with HIPAA regulations).

The skills required of the CIO include but are not limited to: High level of knowledge of I.T. systems and infrastructure, ability to use resources to implement IT solutions, solid understanding of data analysis, budgeting and business operations, superior analytical and problem-solving capabilities, a strong strategic and business mindset, excellent organizational and leadership skills, ability to make ethical decisions, and effective and diplomatic communication, instruction and education. Must be able to act calmly and rationally in crisis situations and be able to gain and retain the respect and confidence of laboratory peers, staff and senior leadership. Knowledge of LIS Sunquest, Soarian, EPIC and Health Level 7(HL7) interface protocol preferred.

Relevant Bachelor’s Degree Certification (BS/BA in computer science, or relevant field; MS/MA preferred. 6 years of leadership experience and expert professional communication skills. A minimum of eight to ten years of Information Systems experience in hospital or related healthcare field with preference given to experience with laboratory services and for-profit company performance.
