Michael R. O'Leary, MD
Chief Executive Officer and Director of Laboratories
Following graduation from SUNY Upstate Medical University, Dr. O'Leary served as resident in the Department of Medicine and Pathology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI and in the Department of Pathology at SUNY Upstate Medical University where he served as Chief Resident. A fellowship in the departments of Surgical Pathology and Cytology was completed at the Henry Ford Hospital. He holds an appointment as Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology at SUNY Upstate Medical University. Dr. O'Leary is a gubernatorial appointee to the Upstate Medical University Council and Chancellor of the State University of New York appointee to the Advisory Council for the Commission on Higher Education in New York State. He was the President of the Association of Council Members and College Trustees of the State University of New York from 2006-2008. He is a member of the National Pathologists Advisory Council of the Joint Commission. Dr. O'Leary is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pathology and the National Board of Medical Examiners. He is also a certified medical review officer (MRO) for industrial drug testing. Dr. O'Leary currently serves as Chief Executive Officer and Director of Laboratories.

Jayne L. Healey, MD
Assistant Director of Laboratories-Operations Center
Dr. Healey spent several years performing research in the field of molecular virology before returning to SUNY Upstate Medical University, where she received her medical degree in 2000. Following graduation, she remained at SUNY Upstate Medical University and completed an internship in emergency medicine. Dr. Healey then went on to complete a residency in Clinical Pathology and a fellowship in Hematopathology, also at SUNY Upstate Medical University. She holds an appointment as Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology at SUNY Upstate Medical University. Dr. Healey is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pathology, having been certified in clinical pathology and hematopathology. She is certified by the New York State Department of Health for Laboratory Directorship and is also recognized as a Fellow in the American Society for Clinical Pathology. Dr. Healey is a certified medical review officer (MRO) for industrial drug testing.

Rachel C. Elder, MD
Director of Laboratories, Crouse Hospital, Medical Advisor, Blood Bank
After graduating from New York Medical College in 1981, Dr. Elder completed an internship and fellowship in Surgical Transplantation followed by a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, CT. Currently she is the Director of Laboratories at Crouse Hospital and at Community Memorial Hospital in Hamilton, NY. Dr. Elder also serves as Medical Advisor of Transfusion Services and Co-Medical Advisor of General Hematology for Laboratory Alliance of CNY. She is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology.

Randy Kalish, MD
Director of Laboratories, St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center
Following graduation from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI, Dr. Kalish completed a residency in the Department of Pathology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI where he served as Chief Resident. Since 1987 he has served as Director of Laboratories and Chairman of the Department of Pathology at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center. Dr. Kalish also holds an appointment as Clinical Instructor in the Department of Pathology at the SUNY Health Science Center in Syracuse, NY. He is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology.

Joby Swerdlow, MD
Director of Laboratories at Community-General Hospital.
Dr. Swerdlow completed a residency in the Department of Pathology at the SUNY Health Science Center upon her graduation from there in 1979. She practiced in the Berkshires after training. She then served as a fellow in Ob-Gyn and Perinatal Pathology in the Department of Pathology at Magee-Women's Hospital at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Swerdlow joined the staff of Community-General Hospital in Syracuse, NY as an attending physician in the Department of Pathology and also serves as a Clinical Instructor in Pathology at the SUNY Health Science Center. She is chair of the Department of Pathology at Community-General Hospital. She is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and is certified by the New York State Department of Health for Laboratory Directorship.

Qun (Trin) Dong, MD, PhD
Assistant Medical Advisor, Cytology
Dr. Dong graduated from Beijing Medical University and received her Ph.D. in Cell Biology at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC. She spent her residency and fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and joined St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center in 2003. Dr. Dong is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology.

John Fazio, MD
Medical Advisor, Cytology
Dr. Fazio graduated from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1982 and completed a pathology residency at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center and a cytology fellowship at Brooke Army Medical Center. He joined the pathology staff which practices at Community-General Hospital in 1993 and has served as a Clinical Instructor at SUNY Health Science Center in Syracuse, NY. Dr. Fazio is the Medical Advisor of Cytology for Laboratory Alliance of CNY. He is board certified in Anatomic Pathology, Clinical Pathology and Cytopathology.

Lawrence P. Gordon, MD
Consulting Pathologist
Subsequent to graduation from SUNY Upstate Medical Center in 1971, Dr. Gordon completed an internship and residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. Following three years in the Department of Pediatric Pathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Washington, DC, he returned to Syracuse where he has served as Associate Professor of Pathology at the SUNY Health Science Center and as a pathologist at Crouse Hospital. Dr. Gordon is board certified in Anatomic Pathology, Clinical Pathology and Pediatric Pathology.

Assistant Medical Advisor, Special Hematology & Flow Cytometry
Following graduation from Albany Medical College in 1991, Dr. Graber completed an internship there. He then completed a research fellowship in molecular biology at the National Institutes of Health and the Medical University of South Carolina. This was followed by a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and a Hematopathology fellowship at Albany Medical Center. Dr. Graber currently serves as a staff pathologist at Community-General Hospital. He is board certified in Anatomic Pathology, Clinical Pathology and Hematopathology.

Paul A. Granato, PhD, DABMM
Director of Microbiology/Scientific Director, Clinical Microbiology
Dr. Granato obtained his doctorate in microbiology from Syracuse University in 1971 and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in microbiology at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, NY. He has served as the Chief of Microbiology at the V.A. Medical Center in Syracuse, NY, Clinical Microbiologist at Crouse Hospital and Consultant Clinical Microbiologist for the Onondaga County Department of Health. He currently serves as a Clinical Professor in the Departments of Microbiology and Pathology at SUNY Upstate Medical University and in the Department of Biology at Onondaga Community College. Recipient of numerous honors and awards in education and microbiology, Dr. Granato has also served on two microbiology editorial boards and many national committees. He has authored over sixty books, articles and abstracts. He serves as the Director of Microbiology for Laboratory Alliance of CNY and is board certified in Public Health and Medical Microbiology.

Jane Hardman, MD
Laboratory Director, Oneida Healthcare Center Laboratory . Medical Advisor, Special Hematology.
Dr. Hardman graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Washington University, St. Louis, School of Medicine. She completed an internship in Internal Medicine at SUNY Upstate Medical University. After completion of training at U.S. Navy Aerospace Medical Institute in Pensacola, FL she was designated a U.S. Navy Flight Surgeon and practiced as a Navy physician until 1993 and again in 2003. Residency and Fellowship training was at National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, MD and Armed Forces Institute of Pathology leading to Board Certification in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, Forensic Pathology, and Hematopathology. Dr. Hardman is currently Laboratory Director at Oneida Healthcare Center.

Roy F. Huchzermeier, Ph.D.
Chemistry Research & Development Consultant/Research Clinical Chemist
Dr. Huchzermeier obtained his doctorate in biochemistry from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse University in 1981. He spent nine years in the Laboratory at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center and then went to Abbott Laboratories in North Chicago. There, he was the project manager for developing the TDX T-Uptake Thyroid Assay. His interest in research and development led him to make significant achievements coast to coast. Dr. Huchzermeier worked on products and methods at Roche Diagnostics and Ortho Diagnostic Systems, both in New Jersey, before going to Ciba Corning Diagnostics in Massachusetts. This was followed by employment at Miles Diagnostics in New York, and Diagnostic Products Corporation in California. He found his way back to Syracuse in 1994, where he became Founder and CEO of Syracuse Bioanalytical, Inc. He has ten US and foreign patents and patent pending applications. Currently, Laboratory Alliance is utilizing Dr. Huchzermeier's chemistry expertise in a consultant capacity.

Kent Hustad, MD

After graduating from the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis, MN in 1980, Dr. Hustad completed a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and a fellowship in hematopathology at SUNY Upstate Medical University. He joined the pathology department staff at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center in 1986. Dr. Hustad also serves as Cytology Medical Advisor to Laboratory Alliance of CNY. He is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology.

Margaret A. Nichols, MD

Dr. Nichols graduated from Piastow Slaskich Medical University in Wroclaw, Poland (1981) and then specialized in internal medicine. She completed residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Massachusetts (1998) and a fellowship in Hematopathology at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York (1999). For three years she worked at SUNY Upstate Medical University, Department of Pathology as an Assistant Professor and now she is a staff pathologist at Oneida Healthcare Center. Dr. Nichols is board certified in Anatomic Pathology, Clinical Pathology, and Hematopathology.

Patricia M. Spizuoco, MD

After graduating from the University of Vermont Medical School, Dr. Spizuoco completed a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology there. A residency in Hematopathology was completed at Roger Williams Hospital in Providence, RI. Prior to joining the pathology staff at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center Dr Spizuoco served as a fellow in Surgical Pathology at the Hartford Hospital in Hartford, CT. She is board certified in Anatomic Pathology, Clinical Pathology and Cytopathology.

Dan J. Vick, MD
Medical Advisor, Microbiology
A Minnesota native, Dr. Vick received his B.A. in Psychology from the University of Virginia. He attended the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he received his medical degree in 1994. Dr. Vick completed a Transitional Internship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, followed by his Pathology Residency in the National Capitol Consortium Pathology Residency program, which included training at Walter Reed, the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD, and the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. He was the Assistant Chief of Pathology at DeWitt Army Community Hospital at Ft. Belvoir, VA. He was then assigned to Eisenhower Army Medical Center at Ft. Gordon, GA where he served as the Chief of Anatomic Pathology and Medical Director of Microbiology. Dr. Vick left the Army as a Major in 2003. He joined St. Joseph's Pathology, P.C. in July of 2003 as an associate pathologist. He is also the Medical Advisor for Microbiology for Laboratory Alliance of CNY and serves on various committees at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center. In May 2008, Dr. Vick received his Masters in Business Administration degree with honors with an emphasis in healthcare management from Regis University in Denver, CO. Dr. Vick is actively involved in various local and state medical organizations, most notably the Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY). He is currently serving a two-year term on the MSSNY's delegation to the AMA House of Delegates. He is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology.
