Histopathology Services for Community-General Hospital

Autopsy:
LABORATORY:         Histology
REQUISITION:           Autopsy permission form to be signed by next of kin.
AVAILABILITY:          Daily
COMMENTS:            A valid permit must contain a signature of the highest ranking survivor in the next of kin lineage.  Please refer to instructions on Autopsy Permit

Bone Marrow:
LABORATORY:         Hematology and Histology
REQUISITION:           Pathology request form
AVAILBILITY:            Specimens will be accepted daily.  However, processing occurs 
                                
Monday - Friday.

Breast Biopsy:
LABORATORY:         Histology
REQUISITION:           Pathology request form
AVAILABILITY:          Monday - Friday

Estrogen/Progesterone Assay:
LABORATORY:         Histology
REQUISITION:           Pathology request form
AVAILABILITY:          Monday - Friday

NOTE:
  Hormone receptors are now routinely done by immunohistochemistry on paraffin embedded tissue.  Hormone receptor analysis is routinely performed on infiltrating ductal carcinomas and on other carcinomas as requested by the attending physician.

Frozen Tissue Section:
LABORATORY:         Histology
REQUISITION:           Pathology request form
AVAILABILITY:          Monday through Friday, 7:50 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. (all other times available by
                                contacting the on-call pathologist.  Call the Laboratory at 492-5531 to
                                contact the on-call pathologist.)

COMMENT:               Specimen must be submitted fresh, and a laboratory employee or the
                                pathologist must be verbally notified that the specimen is a frozen section.

Histochemical Special Stains:
LABORATORY:         Histology
REQUISITION:           Pathology request form
AVAILABILITY:          Monday - Friday

NOTE:
  If there is a clinical suspicion of specific infections (such as tuberculosis) or diseases such as amyloidosis, these conditions should be noted on the requisition when submitting the tissue to histology.  This will aid the pathologist in proper work-up of the histopathologic specimen

Histopathology:

NOTE:
  Specimens are to be submitted in 10% formalin solution unless other special procedures apply.

Immunoperoxidase Stains:
LABORATORY:         Histology
REQUISITION:           Pathology request form

NOTE:
  Immunoperoxidase stains are most often used to access hormone receptor analysis or to further classify tumors.  As such, they are most often performed at the request of the pathologist and any special requests by the clinicians need to be discussed with the pathologist assigned to a particular case.

Kidney Stone Analysis:
LABORATORY:         Histology
REQUISITION:           Pathology request form
AVAILABILITY:          Monday - Friday
COMMENT:               Kidney stones submitted for analysis will first undergo a gross examination by
                                the pathologist and then are sent to ARUP Laboratories for analysis.

Lymph Node Biopsy:
LABORATORY:         Histology
REQUISITION:           Pathology request form
AVAILABILITY:          Monday - Friday

NOTE:
  Specimens submitted for suspected lymphoma may be submitted fresh; however, lymph node protocol for lymphomas can usually be completed on formalin fixed tissue.  If metastatic disease is suspected, specimens are to be submitted in formalin, unless a frozen section is desired.  Similarly, if infection is suspected and a culture is desired, it is preferred that the attending surgeon divide the lymph node under sterile conditions submitting a portion to the microbiology department and a portion to histology.

Surgical Pathology Consultation, Outside Slides:

NOTE:
  Glass slides from outside cases will be accessioned into the daily workload and assigned 
to one of the pathologists within the department.
